Job Specifics
Duties Description Under the direction of the Director of Private Equity, with ad hoc reporting to Senior Investment Officers, the Investment Officer will informally oversee the junior investment and operations staff (no formal direct reports) for the Private Equity Team at the New York State Common Retirement Fund (“CRF” or the “Fund”). This position may be based in the Albany or New York City office.
• Independently conduct the due diligence process of managers and deals (funds, co-investments, continuation vehicles, secondaries) from end-to-end, including financial and situational evaluation, reference checks and documentation analysis, including offering materials and legal contracts.
• Construct investment recommendations with minimal support and guidance from senior private equity staff.
• Coordinate with the relevant constituencies (e.g., managers, accountants, custodian, legal, consultants) to onboard private equity managers once an investment is approved.
• Work with the Fund’s legal staff and custodian bank to establish new accounts and implement funding.
• Construct and maintain spreadsheets, models, analyses, and qualitative data on external managers.
• Assist senior investment staff in deal origination by proactively sourcing new opportunities and managers.
• Build and maintain ongoing private equity manager relationships, in the commercial sense.
• Monitor a diverse portfolio of private equity investments, which includes recurring reviews and ad-hoc analysis of both individual manager and company-level performance.
• Assist in analyzing the private equity portfolio’s diversification by geography, sector, and investment style.
• Perform research projects and other ad hoc assignments as determined and assigned by the Director and/or other senior Private Equity Team members.
Minimum Qualifications Preferred Qualifications/Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
• Experience: At least three years of relevant financial experience.
• Education: BA in related field (business, finance, economics, or similar quantitative field). MBA, CFA, MS in Finance, or equivalent advanced degree and/or certification preferred.
• High ethical standards and commitment to the fiduciary responsibilities of a pension fund.
• Ability to conduct quantitative analysis (e.g., models) and research to evaluate investment decisions.
• Ability to form value-added judgments on the merits of investment opportunities with support and occasional input from senior investment officers and the director.
• Strong knowledge of private equity concepts, strategies, and fundamental investment factors.
• Ability to build commercial relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts, such as consultants, managers, vendors, peer institutions, and other departments of OSC.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills required to produce investment memos, deal presentations, and participate in internal investment strategy meetings as well as external manager meetings.
• Team player who is energized by a collaborative working environment, within and outside of the asset class, and who completes assignments independently in a timely manner.
Additional Comments Telecommuting: The Office of the New York State Comptroller (OSC) supports telecommuting where it is reasonable to do so based upon the agency’s mission and operational needs. Generally, employees new to OSC will be restricted from telecommuting for at least 8 calendar weeks. After the initial 8 calendar week restriction, if an employee’s primary residence location, duties, and work performance are aligned with telecommuting and operational needs they may be allowed to do so. Generally, OSC employees may telecommute up to 5 days per pay period but may be approved to telecommute less.
