Job Specifics

Duties Description The Senior Laboratory Equipment Designer (LED) will be assigned to the Bureau of Quality Assurance (BQA), Ambient Monitoring Section at the SUNY-East campus QA lab. The Division of Air Resources operates an extensive air monitoring network throughout the state to gather ambient air quality data. The information collected at these monitoring sites is used in State Implementation Plans, for air toxics analysis, to inform the public about potential ambient air quality advisories, air quality complaints brought by the public, Disadvantaged Community concerns, and executive policy making decisions. The duties of the Senior LED would include: training and supervision of LED laboratory staff; performing certifications on ambient air quality monitoring calibration equipment in BQA; conducting periodic quality assurance audits on various air monitoring equipment (including continuous criteria pollutant ambient air monitors, particulate monitors (both discrete (FRM) and continuous (FEM) and zero air systems at air monitoring sites across the state; designing, constructing, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing air monitoring Performance Evaluation Program (PEP) analyzers used in the PEP program audits; establish certification and proficiency for conducting the National PEP for fine particulate matter including: PM2.5, chemical speciation, and maintaining EPA field specialist capability for PEP audits; conducting quality assurance systems audits on air monitoring equipment, and maintaining the standards laboratory for certifying flow and calibration equipment.

Essential Functions:

Must have the ability to design, construct, operate and repair special machines, tools, and/or equipment fabricated for laboratory use and be capable of repairing, calibrating and maintaining such devices.
Must have good supervisory and communication skills.
Must be able to drive a truck or van and be capable of loading and unloading vehicles.
Must be able to operate a computer and possess knowledge of required technical computer programs.
Must be able to write correspondence and reports.
Must be able to lift and carry heavy equipment.
Must be comfortable in the use of ladders and scaffolding

Minimum Qualifications High School diploma and four years of experience in the construction, design, operation, and repair of special machines, tools, and/or equipment fabricated for laboratory use; or bachelor’s degree with specialization in machine design and two years of experience in the construction, design, operation, and repair of special machines, tools, and/or equipment fabricated for laboratory use.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
Travel may be required.
Overtime may be required.
Overnight travel may be required.
Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.
