Job Specifics
Duties Description This position will, under supervision, assist with the implementation of the wildlife diversity mammal and avian program. Duties will involve:
• Coordination and implementation of bat hibernacula surveys
• Coordination and implementation of the summer mobile bat acoustic surveys
• Photo counts from hibernacula surveys
• Bat acoustic analysis
• Creating and managing bat databases
• Reviewing bat special license applications for efficacy of data collection techniques and scientific merit
• Surveying and collecting DNA from New England cottontails to assist with NE regional monitoring efforts
• Assisting with Allegany woodrat surveys and management
• Assisting with all other wildlife diversity bird surveys and data management (grassland birds, colonial waterbirds, nightjars, spruce grouse, bald eagle, peregrine falcon, boreal songbirds, etc.)
• Collation of data and contribution of data summaries to federal aid project reports
• Assisting with the technical aspects of development of mammal and bird wildlife projects for new federal aid cycle
• Managing the Wildlife Diversity Section’s assigned vehicles and submission of monthly vehicle trip reports and coordination of vehicle maintenance
• Inventory and maintenance of the Wildlife Diversity Section’s survey equipment
• Supervision of Fish & Wildlife Technician 1(s) and work crews consisting of permanent and seasonal staff
As part of the Wildlife Diversity Section, the incumbent may also be required to assist Wildlife staff involved in the implementation of other programs as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Three years of experience in fisheries, wildlife, or marine resources management; fish or wildlife propagation; a living marine resources program; or a fish, wildlife, or marine research program.
Substitution: one year of college coursework including at least 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources, wildlife management, or a related field, may substitute for one year of the experience described.
The preferred candidate will have excellent communication and data management skills, and the ability to work independently as well as with other Wildlife staff throughout the state. Experience in the use of Microsoft office (especially Word, Excel, and Outlook). Experience in GIS (e.g., ArcMap) and statistical languages (e.g., R). Additionally, familiarity with the habitats of New York and the biology and management of mammal species native to New York State is preferable.
Additional Comments This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2027, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.
Must be able to work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
Travel may be required.
Overnight travel may be required.
Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.
