Job Specifics

Duties Description Under the direction of a Park Manager/Park Supervisor at Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park (WOTH), the selected candidate will:

• Assist with supervising operations and maintenance activities at WOTH as well as the Walkway Elevator.
• Assist in supervising, training, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of lower-level employees.
• Perform a variety of administrative and clerical tasks, including purchasing; maintaining inventories; collecting and reconciling fees; preparing written reports and documents; answering telephones and responding to inquiries; and providing visitors with information and customer friendly service.
• Perform maintenance of the Walkway, including concrete and expansion joint repair along with other trained staff.
• Perform routine maintenance on and operate a variety of power-driven mechanical equipment, including trucks, tractors, bobcats, snowplows, trailers, mowers, chainsaws, and power saws.
• Perform grounds, landscaping and building maintenance, including restroom cleaning using green practices and a variety of tools.
• Perform routine maintenance in all parks buildings, including the Walkway’s new maintenance center.
• Complete and supervise snow and ice removal operations, sometimes in extreme weather conditions, using knowledge and experience in sustainable snow removal practices necessary at WOTH.
• Assisting with pruning and tree trimming activities involving the operation of a chain saw.
• Maintain parking lots and pay station collection systems.
• Assist in emergency situations by applying emergency procedures and practices; assisting and directing staff; and working with patrons to minimize potential problems.
• Monitor and communicate by two-way radio.
• Work closely with park management in the scheduling, permitting and the operation of public events and programs at the WOTH.
• Work closely with the WOTH Friends Group, volunteers, the community, other departments and agencies, businesses, concessionaires, and vendors.
• Perform other duties as assigned by their direct supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications Reassignment Qualifications:

Applicants must currently be in a Park Worker 3 position with OPRHP.

Non-Competitive Qualifications:

One year of experience in the operation and/or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility;

OR - One year of experience in any of the following fields:
• Law enforcement or security
• Firefighting
• Emergency Medical Services
• Environmental education or stewardship
• Natural resources management (e.g., forest management, wildlife management/preservation)
• Historic preservation or interpretation
• Landscaping or grounds maintenance

OR - One year of military service in any branch of the United States Armed Forces;

OR - Thirty (30) semester credit hours of college-level coursework from an accredited college or university;

OR - Completion of a two-year technical/trades school program;

OR - Two years of experience as a trade assistant working under the direct supervision of a skilled tradesperson.

Additional Comments Operational Needs:

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be physically able to perform light to medium physical labor.
• Must be willing to be fit tested and respirator approved to perform certain tasks throughout the park.
• Must have the ability to operate a chainsaw and must complete OPRHP sawyer training or equivalent within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment. This training will be provided by OPRHP
• Must be able to supervise employees, communicate effectively and interact cohesively with staff, park patrons, and all others.
• Must be able to communicate in writing and comprehend written material.
• Must be able to work with a minimal amount of supervision.
• Must be able to work a variable work schedule to meet operational needs, including weekends and holidays. Park hours are sunrise to sunset, and employees are scheduled accordingly.
• Must be willing to work at other State Parks facilities if needed.
