Job Specifics

Duties Description Must be able to perform all the typical activities, tasks and assignments of a Service & Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment) described and written by the NYS Civil Service classification standard. This person will be responsible to complete diagnostic and corrective measures to determine the causes of faulty vehicle and equipment operation. The incumbent will overhaul, adjust, and repair gaseous fuel engines; clutches, transmissions and differentials; ignition, wiring, lighting, fuel, and cooling, braking and complex hydraulic systems; steering, wheel and suspension mechanisms; and body, cab and frame components. This person may be required to overhaul and rebuild starters, generators, compressors, pumps (fuel, water, air and hydraulic), spreaders, small engines, mowers and a variety of other equipment, including, but not limited to track vehicles, loaders (front-end and belt), cranes, shovels, lifts, hydraulic excavators, boats, etc. The incumbent may diagnose and repair electronic engine control systems, anti-lock brake systems, air brake systems, and air conditioning. The person will be required to do cutting and welding. The person will supervise subordinate staff by making assignments and observing and inspecting work. They will be responsible for housekeeping, shop safety, proper use of PPE, redlining faulty and unsafe vehicles and equipment. This person will be required to make road trouble calls and test drive equipment.

The incumbent must have computer knowledge to maintain work orders on MMS, schedule work requests, and research technical manuals and parts catalogs.

They must have knowledge of the state procurement system for payment of outside repairs and replacement parts. Also, they must have a valid NYS inspector’s license for both heavy and light duty vehicles or obtain them within 6 months. This person must possess a valid class "B" CDL with towing endorsement or obtain one within 12 months.

The use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required. This person must be able to negotiate difficult terrain, work in remote areas and in adverse weather conditions. Travel and overnight travel may be required, along with overtime. Weekends and holidays may be required. This person must be available for emergency response and be available to respond to after-hours emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems
OR an associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.

Substitution: Education as detailed below may be substituted for a maximum of two years of experience.

Graduation from a technical or vocational program, such as B.O.C.E.S, in automotive or diesel technology or automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for one year of experience.

Graduation from a one-year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience.

Must have a valid NYS DMV Inspector’s license for both heavy and light duty vehicles or obtain them within 6 months of appointment.

Must obtain a Class B CDL within 12 months of appointment with appropriate endorsements and no airbrake restriction.

Additional Comments This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2027, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.

Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview.

Must complete an annual Health and Safety Program including medical monitoring, fit testing, and 40 (or 8) hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification.
Must obtain a Class B CDL within 12 months of appointment with appropriate endorsements and no air brake restriction.
Will be subject to the Federal Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (OTETA) of 1991, which requires employee testing for drug and alcohol abuse.
Must be able to lift and move objects up to 75 pounds.
