Duties Description Summary:
The Service & Repair Assistant (Motor Equipment) performs semiskilled maintenance, repair, and preventive service on automotive, mechanical, and facility equipment. This role involves working independently on routine tasks and assisting journey-level mechanics with complex, major mechanical repairs.

Salary: $42,641

Schedule: Monday through Friday with Saturday and Sunday pass-days. Hours will be 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., hours may vary based on operational need.

Major Responsibilities:
Automotive & Mechanical Repair
• Perform routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs on automobiles, trucks, and mechanical equipment.
• Service brakes, suspension systems, fuel systems, cooling systems, exhaust systems, and other vehicle components.
• Perform tune-ups, minor engine repairs, and component replacements according to manufacturer specifications.
• Diagnose basic mechanical problems and restore equipment to proper operating condition.

Preventive Maintenance & Inspection
• Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance inspections on vehicles to ensure safe operation.
• Clean parts, replace defective components, and lubricate moving machinery parts.
• Perform routine machinist-related tasks and maintain maintenance records as required.
• Assist journey-level positions with major engine teardowns and reassembly.

Specialized Assistance & Equipment Operation
• Clean mechanical parts and inspect them thoroughly for structural wear.
• Conduct routine machinist tasks, including grinding valves and valve seats.
• Operate various motor vehicles and specialized mechanical equipment.
• Perform basic welding and fabrication work using electric or oxy-acetylene welding equipment.
• Inspect, service, and repair facility equipment such as pumps, circulators, sterilizers, and hydraulic systems using manuals.

Crew Leadership
• Serve as a lead worker over small maintenance crews.
• Distribute daily work assignments and provide clear instructions to unskilled workers.
• Offer hands-on aid and oversight to crew members during tasks.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Working knowledge of the methods, material, tools and equipment used for making a variety of mechanical repairs on automotive and other motor driven equipment.
• Working knowledge of the operation of small engines, lawn mowers, tractors and automotive equipment.
• Ability to work various holidays on a rotational basis.
• Ability to use the tools, equipment and materials of the mechanical trade.
• Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions.
• Working knowledge of windows-based computer and basic keyboarding skills.
• Ability to work On-Call shifts.
• Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Minimum Qualifications
Two years of experience in mechanical work (i.e. mechanical repairs on automotive and other motor-driven equipment) under the supervision of a journey-level skilled tradesperson, or completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course (post high school.)

Must have group one NYS inspection license or ability to get one within one year of hire.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

Additional Comments SUNY Cortland employment offers eligibility for the Public Student Loan Forgiveness Program. The PSLF Program forgives the remaining balance on Direct Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments have been made under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time for a qualifying employer.
