Job Specifics

Duties Description The New York State Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) provides operational support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year, supporting more than 4,900 applications for 53 New York State Agencies.

Under the direction of an Information Technology Specialist 4, within the Enterprise Monitoring bureau of the Chief Technology Office, the incumbent will be a member of the Observability platform team. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
• Design, implement, and maintain a centralized observability platform that aggregates logs, metrics, traces, and other telemetry data from diverse sources.
• Develop and integrate instrumentation for applications, infrastructure, and services to ensure comprehensive data collection.
• Configure and manage observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Kibana, Jaeger, OpenTelemetry) to provide actionable insights.
• Create dashboards, alerts, and runbooks that empower engineering and operations teams to understand system health and respond effectively to incidents.
• Collaborate with development and SRE teams to define observability requirements and best practices for new services and features.
• Automate the deployment, configuration, and management of observability tooling.
• Analyze telemetry data to identify performance bottlenecks, potential issues, and areas for optimization.
• Participate in incident response, providing critical data and insights to facilitate rapid resolution.
• Stay current with emerging trends and technologies in observability, AIOps, and distributed systems monitoring.
• Contribute to the development of a strong observability culture across the organization.

Minimum Qualifications A bachelor's or higher-level degree in any field and one year of experience in information technology;

OR

60 semester credit hours including or supplemented by 15 semester credit hours in computer science and one year of professional experience in information technology.

OR

Two years of professional experience in information technology.

Additional Comments ITS will not offer permanent employment to any candidate unless the candidate provides documentation that they are authorized to accept work in the United States on a permanent basis. It is the policy of ITS not to hire F1 or H1 visa holders for permanent employment or to sponsor non-immigrant aliens for temporary work authorization visas or for permanent residence.

Some positions may require fingerprinting.

Some positions may require up to 25% travel and/or lifting up to 50 lbs. Some positions are pending Civil Service approval. Details of position(s) will be described further if you are selected for an interview.

If eligible, positions located in New York City will receive an additional $3,400 downstate adjustment location pay with regular annual salary. Positions located in the Mid-Hudson will receive an additional $1,650 adjustment location pay.
