Job Specifics

Duties Description The University Police Officer 2 (Lieutenant) is responsible for all law enforcement and security activity on their assigned shift, to include direct supervision of all University Police Officers, Campus Public Safety Officers, Supervising Security Services Assistants and Security Services Assistants. They ensure that officers are deployed to cover all regular posts as well as special events.
Lieutenants will evaluate and counsel all staff under their supervision and prepare required evaluations in conjunction with other Lieutenants as appropriate.
University Police Lieutenants must exercise direct command in a manner that assures the good order, conduct, discipline and efficiency of subordinates. Exercise of command may extend to subordinates outside their usual sphere of supervision if the security objective or reputation of the department so requires; or if no other provision is made for personnel temporarily unsupervised. This authority shall not be exercised unnecessarily. If Lieutenants require a subordinate other than their own to leave a regular assignment, the supervisor so directing will inform the subordinate’s own supervisor as soon as possible.

Minimum Qualifications COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must be current state employees and have a reachable score on the University Police Officer 2 list; or
Have a current permanent appointment with 1 year of service as a University Police Officer 2, or as a title eligible for transfer to University Police Officer 2; or
Have an appointment as University Police Officer 2 here at UAlbany with less than 1 year of service (remainder of probationary period to be completed in new assignment); or
Be a former state employee eligible for reinstatement to the title of University Police Officer 2

May be filled from a mandatory reemployment list if one is in effect at the time of appointment.
