Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications for the Fish and Wildlife Technician 1 position which are as follows: 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries; marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.
Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Access, and ESRI’s ArcMap 10 is highly desired. Must be able to safely operate state vehicles, including 4 wheel drive SUVs and pickup trucks by him/herself. Must be able to walk long distances over rough terrain and orient himself/herself in unfamiliar territory while carrying a maximum of 20 lbs of gear. Overnight travel will occasionally be required. Driver's license is required.
Duties Description The applicant will assist in the operations of the regional wildlife office of the New York Department of Environmental Conservation in New Paltz. Primary job duties will involve maintaining the regional bear report database and dealing with the public regarding human-bear conflicts, both on the phone and in the field. The candidate will be required to set and monitor bear traps, maintain equipment, and assist in handling trapped bears and bears captured in urban situations. Other duties may include: endangered species monitoring, pheasant stocking, fielding calls from the public on the general wildlife phone, collecting data from harvested deer and bear, bird surveys, and other ongoing research projects.
Additional Comments These are seasonal, hourly appointments. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date, which may be prior to dates listed in duties description. Actual work schedule, duties, and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview. Will work in remote locations in adverse weather conditions. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain on foot carrying necessary equipment and supplies. Must have a valid driver's license.
