Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications for the Fish and Wildlife Technician 1 position which are as follows: 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries; marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.

All candidates must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License. Preferred candidates will have the ability to operate motorboats and trailers and repair and maintain equipment. Good fish identification skills are important, and the ability to use Microsoft Excel, Access, Word and ArcGIS is a plus.

Duties Description The NYS DEC Region 3 Inland Fisheries Unit will be hiring to fill three temporary positions. The primary focus of the positions will be backpack electrofishing streams throughout Southeastern New York looking for the presence or absence of trout (starting mid-May 2017). Candidates will also be using a variety electrofishing gears, setting and retrieving fishing nets, operating outboard motor boats, identifying fish, and hiking into remote areas with up to 50 pounds of gear. They will organize and enter data on paper forms and on a computer, take and prepare fish scales, and help maintain and clean all equipment.

Additional Comments All positions are expected to end by November 30, 2017. Program needs and funding will determine actual hours worked and termination date, which may be prior to 11/30/17.

Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the time of an interview. Night and weekend work may be required.

Must be able to work when there are unexpected deviations from the schedule due to unexpected equipment failures, vehicle repairs, etc. Technicians are required to work in a variety of inclement weather conditions, negotiate difficult terrain and work in remote areas.
