Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
For consideration for this title, you must meet one of the following minimum qualifications:
- NYS Department of Civil Service Eligible List or eligible for transfer
Or
- Promotional:
- You must be a qualified employee of the State University of New York and have had one year of permanent competitive, non-competitive NY HELPS*, or 55-b/55-c service as a Security Services Assistant 1, Security Services Assistant 2, or Security Officer.
Open competitive (Non-competitive, NY HELPS) Qualifications
Either 1. one year of full time experience as a Police or Peace Officer;
Or 2. one year of full time experience as a dispatcher for a public safety agency including fire departments, emergency medical services, or law enforcement;
Or 3. one year of active service and an Honorable Discharge from the United States military, where you served as a dispatcher or military police/security personnel;
Or 4. 30 semester college credit hours from an accredited school (college must be recognized by the NYS Education Dept).
Examples of Non-Qualifying Experience: Taxi, limousine, or bus service dispatcher; automotive service dispatcher; trucking dispatcher; or maintenance dispatcher.
*The NYS Department of Civil Service has expanded the NY Helps Program.
During this program, the NYS Civil Service Exam requirements are suspended for the University Police Communications and Security, SG110 title.
Duties Description Duties include but are not limited to: maintain status and control over all mobile radio units in service; reports emergency situations to supervisory personnel; operate radio receiver and broadcast equipment, telephone equipment, the New York Statewide Police Information Network (NYSPIN) terminal equipment, personal computers, closed circuit television systems, and electronic security systems. Monitors and controls electronic access system, retrieves and reviews messages, prepares written reports; operates logging devices. Maintains communications files and performs other communication-related duties as required by the shift supervisor. May perform security guard duties to support campus police operations.

If appointed to a University Police Communications and Security Specialist 1 position, you must obtain a Security Guard Photo ID from the New York State Department of State within 90 days of appointment.
