Minimum Qualifications Non-Competitive: Bachelor's degree in the natural sciences and two years of post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field, or a Master's degree in the appropriate field and one year of post-degree professional research experience in that field.
Preferred Qualifications: A minimum of six months experience in microbiological analyses of cannabis samples, experience with bacterial and fungal culturing techniques, experience with real-time PCR and/or MALDI-TOF MS organism identification, excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills, and experience working in an accredited microbiology laboratory.
Duties Description A Research Scientist 1 is needed to support of the Laboratory of Environmental Biology where staff conduct research, testing, and analysis of water and cannabis samples for waterborne pathogens, algal toxins, and microbiological contaminants. In collaboration between the Department of Health, Wadsworth Center, and the Office of Cannabis Management, the incumbent will be responsible for researching, analyzing, and testing cannabis samples for regulated and non-regulated microbiological contaminants and compiling and communicating the results.
Additional Comments Dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position satisfactory background checks will be required. Additionally, exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position; the selected candidate may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations. Overtime work may be required, including some weekends and evenings.

Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
