Minimum Qualifications Must be reachable for appointment on the appropriate NYS Civil Service List. OR
Promotion: one year of permanent service as a Security Services Assistant 1, Security Services Assistant 2, or Security Officer. OR
Transfer Eligible: a current employee with one year of permanent or contingent permanent service in Salary Grade 10 and title deemed eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of Civil Service Law. Open Competitive: One year of full-time experience as a police or peace officer; OR one year of full-time experience as a dispatcher for a public safety agency including fire departments, emergency medical services, or law enforcement; OR one year of active U.S. military service as a dispatcher of military police or security personnel and an honorable discharge or under conditions in the NYS Restoration of Honor Act; OR thirty college credit hours from an accredited institution of higher education.

The position is subject to the Security Guard Act of 1993. Incumbents must obtain a Security Guard Photo ID from the New York State Department of State within 90 days of appointment.

Duties Description According to Civil Service Standards, but particularly: controls base, fixed or mobile communication systems; maintains status and control over all radio units in service; monitors all equipment in the dispatch area and reports all departures from required procedures to the appropriate supervisor; and reports emergency situations to supervisory personnel, including the inability to establish communications with a mobile unit. Operates computers, communications, and support equipment, consistent with New York State E-Justice and National Crime Information Center rules and regulations. Operates radio, telephone and broadcast equipment, closed-circuit television systems, and electronic security systems. Monitors, activates, deactivates, and controls electronic access systems. Retrieves and reviews messages received from data systems and stores or distributes them according to prescribed procedures. Prepares written reports and maintains the police department blotter as assigned. Operates logging devices to automatically record video, radio and telephone transmissions, and archive them as required. Maintains communications files and performs other communication-related duties as required.

Additional Comments This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.

At a future date, it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in an NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

May be filled from a mandatory reemployment list if one is in effect at the time of appointment.

Must be able to work weekends and holidays.
