Minimum Qualifications Non-Competitive: bachelor’s degree in the Biology, Public Health, Epidemiology, Infection Control, Statistics/Biostatistics, Biomedical Science, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a related degree and two years of post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field, or a Master's degree in the appropriate field and on year of post-degree professional research experience in that field.
Preferred Qualifications: Background in human genetics, epidemiology or public health. Experience in data analysis, management and reporting. Strong working knowledge of SQL, Excel, and statistics. Experience preparing data for the scientific community and the public. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Duties Description The primary purpose of this position is to assist the Newborn Screening Program with epidemiological research and surveillance of pre-analytic factors associated with the submission of newborn dried blood specimens and demographic data by birthing facilities with the end goal of quality improvement. The incumbent will work both independently and under the direction of senior scientists to contribute directly towards problem definition, study design, execution, analyses, interpretation and presentation of results. The incumbent will assist with surveillance to identify and reduce risk factors that can impact newborn screening pre-analytic processes and outcomes; monitor and evaluate the site-specific and aggregate analyses of birthing facilities, including specimen collection, specimen transport to the state public health laboratory, specimen quality and demographic data associated with newborn specimens.
Additional Comments Permanent, non-competitive, fulltime. Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position, the selected candidate will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment. Work hours may be variable. Some travel may be required.
This position may require travel throughout New York State including overnights to areas not served by public transportation.
For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
