Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Required for transfer:
Open to NYS employees with one year of permanent competitive service as a Computer Operator or a title eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.

Minimum Qualifications Required for Appointment HELPS Appointment:

Computer Operator Trainee: high school diploma/high school equivalency diploma.

Computer Operator Journey level: high school diploma/high school equivalency diploma and six months full-time experience in the operation of large scale/commercial printing equipment OR six months full- time experience in the operation of a mainframe or medium to large server or complex, multi-variable print production.

Candidates eligible for consideration under the Governor's Program to Hire Persons/Veterans with Disabilities pursuant to Section 55-b/c of the Civil Service Law are also encouraged to apply. Individuals certified eligible for the 55-b/c program must meet the education and experience qualifications stated above.

Duties Description Under the direction of the Chief Computer Operator, SG-23, within the Chief Technology Office/Data Center Services/Console and Print Operations, the position will monitor and control the operation of data processing equipment in conformance with documented procedures. Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Operates peripheral equipment including, but not limited to, Xerox and/or IBM printers and/or personal computers.
• Loads and mounts paper onto equipment.
• Monitors job progress on print console.
• Checks for equipment errors and takes corrective action in response to minor error messages.
• Checks operation of printers to assure proper alignment and sequence of forms.
• Removes jammed forms.
• Notifies supervisor of equipment problems.
• Reviews completed jobs to ensure compliance with user agency specifications.
• Maintains job status logs.
• Performs routine maintenance and cleaning duties including cleaning printer and the work area.
• Monitors consoles (mainframe, open systems, hardware, diagnostic, or other critical displays) for performance alerts, batch program errors, and other problems.
• Monitors facility environmental controls (security, fire, humidity, and temperature).
• Notifies supervisor of errors, alerts, or other problems.
• Assists in resolving errors according to documented procedures.
• Assists in performing system boots according to documented procedures and ensuring that systems are operating correctly upon restarting.
• Performs duties that require one to bend, stoop, lift heavy (up to 50 lbs.) objects, push up to 1000 rolling pounds, and operate a pallet jack during a normal business day.
Assignment will include a restriction on playing Lottery games.


Additional Comments For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non- competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.

At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

We will be filling this position at the Swan Street Data Center on one of the shifts listed below.

Day: Mon-Fri 7:00AM – 3:15PM
Evening: Mon-Fri 3:00PM – 11:15PM
Night: Sun-Thurs 11:00PM – 7:15AM
Weekend Day: Fri-Sun 7:00AM – 8:00PM
Weekend Night: Fri-Sun 7:00PM – 8:00AM


Assignment will include a restriction on playing Lottery games.

Due to the secure nature of the work at the Data Center, candidates will be required to undergo a special background check.

Some positions may require fingerprinting.

Some travel to the other Data Center Sites may be needed for site coverage and for escort duty of non-authorized visitors
