Duties Description • Assist in the review of drawings, specifications, and contract documents to retrieve data for the construction materials and procedures of construction projects.
• Inspect on-site construction materials used by contractors for small or single trade construction projects.
• Assist in the inspection of a portion of large State building construction projects to assure contractor adherence to specifications, contracts, and work standards.
• Perform other duties and special projects as required.
• Travel may be required.

Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS)* and applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications to be considered for this position:

Applicants must provide proof of a current certification as a Code Enforcement Official pursuant to Title 19 NYCRR, Part 434 or Part 1208.

Required experience: Seven years of full-time experience** in the enforcement, inspection, development, or teaching of building or fire codes; or the design of buildings in a position such as a specifications writer, draftsperson, architect, or engineer.

**Applicants with one of the below qualifying degrees may substitute for experience as follows:
No degree: seven years of required experience.
Associate degree: two years of required experience.
Bachelor’s degree: four years of experience.
Master’s degree: five years of experience.
Doctorate degree: six years of experience.

Qualifying degrees: architectural engineering, architecture, civil engineering, construction technology, electrical engineering, fire protection engineering, fire protection technology, or mechanical engineering.

Applicants may be appointed to this position if currently reachable on the appropriate eligible list for this title OR are a current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service as a Code Compliance Specialist 2.

Additional Comments *There is no examination required for appointment to a NY HELPS position. Candidates hired via NY HELPS will be appointed on a permanent non-competitive basis and will begin a probationary period.

At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected that NY HELPS employees will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to take an exam. Employees will then be afforded with all the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
