Duties Description The Diagnostic Immunology Laboratory serves as the New York State public health reference laboratory performing serologic assays for the detection of patient antibody responses to bacteria, parasites, and viruses. The laboratory performs reference level testing for the confirmation of serologic results suggesting the presence of infectious diseases reportable to New York State. Through collaborations with the Department of Health's Division of Epidemiology, the laboratory assists in the investigation of infectious disease outbreaks and participates in disease surveillance. The laboratory also collaborates with other public health and academic institutions in providing hands-on training in serologic assay development. The selected candidate will be involved in all aspects of infectious disease serology specimen processing including arbovirus and tick-borne pathogen testing. Additionally, the candidate will assist with laboratory maintenance, purchasing and budgeting.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in the natural sciences and three years of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field; or a Master's degree in the appropriate field and two years of such experience; or a doctorate in the appropriate field.
Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have recent work experience or course work in clinical laboratory sciences, microbiology, public health or infectious diseases. In addition, the candidate would possess a Bachelor’s degree in biological or chemical sciences and a minimum of two years’ experience in the handling of infectious clinical samples and/or human pathogens at biosafety level-2 containment. Particularly relevant is recent experience in clinical or diagnostic immunology principles and practice, including Luminex-based assays and ELISAs. A knowledge of good laboratory practice is desirable, as is familiarity with procedures performed per CLEP/CLIA standards. The preferred candidate will have excellent written and communication skills.
Additional Comments Please describe any research/applied research experience that you have. Permanent, non-competitive, fulltime. Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position, the selected candidate will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment. Work hours may be variable. Some travel may be required. Dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position satisfactory background checks may be required.
This position may require travel throughout New York State including overnights to areas not served by public transportation.

For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
