Duties Description • May perform any of the duties enumerated for Land Surveyor Technicians 1 for more difficult and complex survey tasks.
• Conduct field surveys of State property lines.
• Review hydrographic, topographic and engineering surveys.
• Inspects the work of private surveyors retained by the State or an abutting private owner to survey State property lines of lands to be acquired or disposed.
• Create maps, search titles and old records for survey and title information.
• Devise survey computations and maintain survey records.
• Assist in the maintenance of records, review maps, and prepare consultant contracts.
• Record research, assist in field inspections and reviews and perform property boundary surveys with applicable survey principles and practices for the determination of the State’s title boundaries and subdivision of State lands.
• Maintain inventory of State-owned real property; including electronic document management, scanning of documents and maps, indexing scanned images and maintain folder structures for scanned images.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS)* and applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications to be considered for this position:

Required Experience: Four years of experience** in land surveying that includes conducting measurements of space, water, land, and structures to determine boundaries, areas, elevations, alignments, volumes, and locations and performing evaluation and analysis of field data and researching public and private land records.

**Substitutions: An associate degree in a related field may substitute for two years of specialized experience; a bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field can substitute for four years of experience.

Applicants may be appointed to this position if currently reachable on the appropriate eligible list for this title OR are a current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service as a Land Surveyor Technician 2 and interested in reassignment.

Additional Comments Notes:
*There is no examination required for appointment to a NY HELPS position. Candidates hired via NY HELPS will be appointed on a permanent non-competitive basis and will begin a probationary period.

At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected that NY HELPS employees will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to take an exam. Employees will then be afforded with all the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
