Minimum Qualifications One year permanent competitive service as an Information Technology Specialist 4 (Database); OR who are in a position at G-23 or higher and deemed administrative under Section 52.6 of Civil Service Law; OR who are in a position approved for transfer under Section 70.1 of Civil Service Law. The transfer cannot be a second consecutive transfer resulting in advancement of more than two salary grades, or one M-grade.

Duties Description Under the direction of a Manager of Information Technology Services 1 (Database), the Information Technology Specialist 4 (Database) is primarily responsible for the management and upkeep of MS SQL Server databases that support Department of Labor business applications. The Information Technology Specialist 4 (Database) will also provide DBA support for databases at additional agencies including those at the NYS consolidated datacenter located at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE).

This position will provide supervision and oversight over two or more subordinate ITS-3(DB) staff and consulting staff if assigned.

This position will provide expert level assistance to Systems Administrators and CTO architects relating to database software platforms, including design/build of new Database service offerings, problem detection and resolution, installation, and upgrades. This position will work closely and provide assistance to Application Developers, Application Architects, and Data Architects in creating physical database designs and will create physical database structures and database objects to implement the physical design.

The ITS-4 (DB) will provide expert level administration and operational support of Production databases by monitoring and tuning database systems and SQL queries to ensure optimal performance and availability; analyzing and diagnosing Database system problems and providing timely resolution; maintaining Database security related to applications, and guaranteeing recoverability of data by ensuring daily backup operations and processes complete successfully.

Due to the 24x7 availability requirements for certain critical applications, the ITS-4(DB) is expected to be part of an On Call schedule to respond to incidents and outages occurring during off-shift hours.


Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Perform the most complex and critical MS SQL Server DBA tasks;

• Provide supervision and oversight over subordinate DBA staff and consultants;

• Make sure that MS SQL Server Databases are backed up, functioning properly and available to users;

• Safeguard MS SQL Server Databases by ensuring that proper backup/restore and other administrative procedures are followed;

• Monitor MS SQL Server database statistics for current and potential problems, solve or participate in the solution of any problems associated with the databases, and suggest changes that may result in increased access and/or efficiency of the databases;

• Ensure that all NYS established security protocols pertaining to Database Administration have been taken;

• Perform database tasks as per requests from users, which includes requests for all types of database administration tasks;

• Generate task lists, test plans and implementation plans pertaining to changes to the database structure, and implement planned changes to the database structure;

• Participate in the On Call rotation schedules, ensure that there is OnCall coverage at all times, work to resolve any problems that may arise, and be available to assist in crisis situations;

• Generate necessary database documentation, including updates to manuals;

• Participate in eOPS DBA – Distributed Databases meetings and keeping supervisor informed of the status of assigned database projects;

• Participate in training.
