Duties Description
Duties include but are not limited to:
• Incumbent will transform complicated engineering materials and jargon into language that is easily understandable to the general public, keeping in mind that the ultimate goal is to convey NYSDOT’s overall mission and messaging in as positive a light as possible.
• Utilizing critical and independent thinking to discern what information is necessary and what is not in order to properly craft media responses and press releases that advance NYSDOT’s mission.
• Utilizing strong writing skills with working knowledge of spelling, grammar and attention to detail, as well as strong editing skills and knowledge of writing in plain language.
• Travel will be required as part of the position, both with the Commissioner and Executive team to locations across the state to coordinate public events on site, often preparing materials in advance of the event and coordinating with stakeholders.
• Amplify key messages from the Department, both internally and externally on a consistent basis to key internal and external stakeholders.
• Assist in the coordination of transportation related announcements by NYSDOT and the Executive Chamber, in partnership with other state agencies.
• Idea generation on ways to promote the Department and its mission to New Yorkers.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
Minimum Qualifications A bachelor’s degree and four years of relevant experience.
*Substitutions: four years of specialized experience or associate’s degree and two years of specialized experience may substitute for bachelor’s degree; J.D. or master’s degree may substitute for one year of specialized experience; Ph.D. may substitute for two years of specialized experience.
This is strictly a press and an internal/external public relations-focused position. Backgrounds in marketing, digital marketing, account executive, social media, television and radio writing, advertising, business development, sales, and other related topics are largely irrelevant to the duties required to succeed in this position.
Candidates may be asked to craft a writing sample in person during the interview process.

The salary range listed reflects the full range for this graded position. For new State employees appointed into graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
