Duties Description Position Information:
The Department of Agriculture and Markets is seeking four Maintenance Supervisor 1s to oversee four maintenance shops on the New York State Fairgrounds. The maintenance shops include paint, plumbing, carpentry, and automotive. The Fairgrounds are located at 581 State Fair Boulevard in Syracuse, NY, offering a comfortable work environment, and free parking. These are permanent, non-competitive, CSEA-represented positions working 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday.
The Maintenance Supervisor 1 supervises a crew of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled positions in maintenance, repair, installation and construction activities of the New York State Fairgrounds facilities, property, and equipment. The incumbent also performs skilled journey-level trades work, in one specific skilled trade and/or a combination of skilled and semiskilled duties in various skilled trades for the repair and maintenance of the Fairgrounds property.
There is one Maintenance Supervisor, SG-14 vacancy for each of the specified shops, with responsibilities of each shop listed below:
Paint:
The Maintenance Supervisor 1 responsibilities within the Paint Shop include but are not limited to performing, as well as supervising and instructing others in preparing surfaces and applying coats of paint, varnish, and other finishes and stains to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces and fixtures of buildings, structures, furniture, equipment, and materials.
Plumbing:
The Maintenance Supervisor 1 responsibilities within the Plumbing Shop include but are not limited to performing, as well as supervising and instructing others in installation, alteration, and repair of pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, ventilating, heating control, water, and drainage systems according to specification and plumbing codes at the New York State Fairgrounds.
Carpentry:
The Maintenance Supervisor 1 responsibilities within the Carpentry Shop include but are not limited to performing, as well as supervising and instructing others in journey-level carpentry work and construction and repair of structures and other items. Additional duties include roofing, millwork, furniture construction, furniture finishing and repair, cabinet work, and use of common construction tools and equipment. Incumbents may also install and adjust door and building hardware, including locks, door closures, doorknobs, hinges, door checks, sash fittings, and other lock work activities.
Automotive:
The Maintenance Supervisor 1 responsibilities within the Automotive Shop include but are not limited to performing, as well as supervising and instructing others in skilled mechanical work in automotive repair including the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of gasoline, diesel-powered, and alternative fuel self-propelled and non-self-propelled motor-driven equipment. This position may also perform routine maintenance and mechanical repairs on disabled vehicles, construction, and other equipment on the fairgrounds.

Minimum Qualifications:
Non-competitive: One year of trade experience subsequent to the completion of an apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience such as that required for a Trades Specialist (Carpenter), Trades Specialist (Electrician), Service & Repair Mechanic (Electronics), Trades Generalist, Grounds Construction Supervisor, Trades Specialist (Locksmith), Trades Specialist (Machinist), Trades Specialist (Mason & Plasterer), Service & Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment), Trades Specialist (Painter), Trades Specialist (Plumber & Steamfitter), Service & Repair Mechanic (HVAC-R), Trades Specialist (Roofing), or Trades Specialist (Welder).
The incumbent in the Maintenance Supervisor 1 position will not receive tenure rights until the completion of five years of continuous service in the Non-Competitive Class.

The PSLF Program forgives the remaining balance on your direct loans after you have made 120 qualifying monthly payments under an accepted repayment plan and while working full-time for the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets or another eligible employer.
Salary:
These Maintenance Supervisor 1 positions are in the CSEA Salary Grade (SG) 14. The starting salary of the CSEA SG-14 is $56,506/year.
The candidates appointed to these positions will be eligible to participate in the New York State Performance Evaluation Program. Through this program, employees receive yearly performance evaluations. Performance advances are payable to CSEA employees whose base annual salary is below the job rate for their current position and who were rated "Satisfactory" or its equivalent on their yearly performance evaluation. Performance advance payments are added to an employee's annual salary. Over time, yearly performance advances may lead to the SG-14 job rate salary of $68,630/ year!
