Duties Description The Senior Recreation Therapist will plan, develop and implement individual or group recreation therapy treatment for primarily SNF and TCU patients as regulated by NYS Department of Health and CMS regulations required for SNF and TCU. The Senior Recreation Therapist completes and charts TR assessments, goals, progress notes, and discharge summaries; develops treatment plans appropriate to the individual’s needs, goals and expected outcomes. The incumbent will chart interdisciplinary patient/family education forms for leisure education goals and plan of care for caseload patients; plans, organizes, implements individuals and small group TR treatment sessions, utilizing leadership interaction style consistent with the treatment plan and the needs of the individual or small group. The Senior Recreation Therapist will also plan, organizes, and implements large group TR programs, hospital wide special events and performing arts programs consistent with patients’ leisure needs and preferences utilizing energetic, enthusiastic leadership style that successfully motivates participants to actively participate in the program; plan, organize, and conduct community reintegration treatment sessions. In addition, the Senior Recreation Therapist will supervise recreation staff in the delivery of rec therapy program.
Minimum Qualifications Current New York State employee with one or more years of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55 b/c service in a position allocated to Grade 15 or above, and that is eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law to Senior Recreation Therapist.
In the absence of an eligible list with three or more candidates willing to accept a position, a provisional appointment may be considered. For provisional appointment, candidates must meet one of the following minimum qualifications: Be a current NYS Department of Health employee with one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as a Recreation Therapist (including parenthetic).
If less than three interested and qualified New York State Department of Health employees serving in the direct-line, lower-level title(s) within the agency apply to this opportunity, the agency may make a non-competitive appointment under the NY HELPS program.
NYS HELPS Open Competitive Minimum Qualifications:
Either 1. a bachelor's degree in therapeutic recreation, creative arts therapy, art therapy, dance therapy, music therapy, drama therapy, adaptive physical education, art, dance, music, drama, recreation education with a concentration in therapeutic recreation, or recreation and leisure studies with a concentration in therapeutic recreation; and two years of post-degree professional experience in planning and administering a therapeutic program which involved developing and coordinating therapeutic activities for a geriatric population, or individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, mental illness, physical disabilities, addiction, or substance use disorders;
or 2. a master's degree in therapeutic recreation, creative arts therapy, art therapy, dance therapy, music therapy, drama therapy, adaptive physical education, art, dance, music, drama, recreation education with a concentration in therapeutic recreation, or recreation and leisure studies with a concentration in therapeutic recreation; and one year of post-degree professional experience as described above.
Minimum Qualifications Substitution:
Licensure and current registration as a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist (LCAT) in New York State; certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC); registration as an Art Therapist with the American Art Therapy Association; registration as a Dance/Movement Therapist with the North American Dance Therapy Association; certification as a Music Therapist by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT); and registration as a Registered Drama Therapist by the North American Drama Therapy Association can substitute for one year of post-degree professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate should have current credentials as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) and should possess experience in planning, organizing and implementing TR programs in a hospital setting.

If there are three or fewer qualified candidates interested in the appointment to this position, a permanent appointment may be made pursuant to Section 52.7 of the Civil Service Law. To be eligible, candidates must be an employee of the Department of Health Helen Hayes Hospital and have one year of permanent competitive service as a a Recreation Therapist (including parenthetic).
The posted salary range ($67,361 -$84,655) includes a downstate adjustment of $4,000.
Inconvenience pay program of $575 per year will be paid to employees who work four (4) hours or more between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Hours worked between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on an overtime basis are not included for Inconvenience Pay. Additional Shift differential of 7% for evening shift and 10% for Night shift.
This position is part of the NYS HELPS program. No examination is required.
