Duties Description The Wadsworth Center’s Division of Environmental Health Science’s operates a centralized sample accessioning laboratory unit that is responsible for the receipt, logging, and distribution of over 3000 environmental and clinical samples received by the Division for public health testing annually. This unit is also responsible for the coordination of sampling schedules and events, communications with sample submitters, and the development and maintenance of procedures and records used to support these activities.
Minimum Qualifications Non-Competitive: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Natural Sciences and one year post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field.
Substitution: 30 graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Microbiology, Public Health, or a related scientific field; prior experience in verifying sample integrity, including proper labeling, preservation, temperature control, container type, and holding times in accordance with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) methods and TNI/NELAP standards; knowledge of laboratory safety standards, chemical hygiene plans, and hazardous waste handling procedures; experience in verifying and calibrating laboratory support equipment in accordance with established standard operating procedures (SOPs); and demonstrated strong organizational skills with the ability to manage high volumes of samples while maintaining and adhering to laboratory SOPs for the receipt, handling, and storage of environmental and clinical samples.

Additionally, exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position; the selected candidate may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations.
