Minimum Qualifications Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or non-competitive 55b/c service as a Legal Assistant 1 OR have one year of permanent competitive or non-competitive 55b/c service in a title eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law OR be reachable on the Legal Assistant 1 or Trainee eligible lists.
Duties Description The Legal Assistant will provide the appropriate legal assistance to Counsel’s Office in relations to Criminal History Background Checks required for all direct care workers to be hired in the OASAS system Specific duties will include, but are not limited to: perform preliminary review of Criminal History Reports received from the Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Justice Center; ensure compliance with necessary procedures to ensure confidentiality and destruction of records in accordance with State and Federal law; serve as the custodian of evidence for the agency, adhering to proper procedures and rules to maintain the chain of custody for evidence obtained and secured; assist with the determination of the accuracy of the information contained in the Criminal History Background Reports; produce scrubbed, vetted and perfected criminal history reports for the Attorney’s review; review appropriate case laws to determine relevancy to background checks; responsible for tracking and follow up related activities during the process; prepare statistical and other reports for the Chief Counsel; review draft legislative proposals; and other duties as assigned.
Additional Comments Salary range for Legal Assistant is $45,018-$54,678. Salary range for Legal Assistant Trainee 1 is $37,998-$46,573.
