Duties Description Under the general direction of an Investigative Specialist 3 (Labor Standards) or other higher-level staff, The Investigative Specialist 2 (Labor Standards) will:
• Supervise, train, and direct at least 2 Investigative Specialist 1s engaged in a wide variety of investigations relating to the administration and enforcement of NYS Labor Law
• May investigate difficult and sensitive investigations and participate in interagency taskforces.
• Plans scope and method of investigation, and coordinates field activities of assigned staff.
• Coordinates investigations with other agency staff or external entities.
• Review completed investigation reports for adequacy of coverage, quality of findings, and soundness of recommendations and/or makes recommendations consistent with findings and agency policy and practice.
• Present cases at conferences as needed
• Testify at hearings as needed
• Interact with the public and regulated community.
Minimum Qualifications As this position requires travel, the appointee must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and have a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Subsequent 55 B/C Qualifications:
A subsequent 55b/c appointment may be considered if you have one year of permanent or contingent-permanent service in an Investigative Specialist 2 (Labor Standards) and have a current Civil Service 55b/c approval letter.
Reassignment Qualifications:
Current Department of Labor employees only, with at least one year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service in an Investigative Specialist 2 (Labor Standards) ; if you have less than one year, you must be reachable on the current Investigative Specialist 2 (Labor Standards) eligible list for this location, if one exists.
70.1 Transfer Qualifications:
One year of permanent or contingent-permanent as a Grade 21 or higher determined to be similar by Civil Service.
Provisional Qualifications: DOL Employees only.
Candidates being considered for Provisional appointment must show they signed up for the Investigative Specialist 2 (Labor Standards) Civil Service Exam which is being held on Saturday, April 18th, 2026. In order to remain in your position, candidates will have to have passed the exam and be reachable to be appointed permanently.
You must be a qualified employee of the New York State Department of Labor and have 1 year of permanent competitive, non-competitive NY HELPS*, or 55-b/55-c service in Investigative Specialist 1 (Labor Standards), Investigative Specialist 1 (Labor Standards) (Chinese Language), Investigative Specialist 1 (Labor Standards) (Korean Language), or Investigative Specialist 1 (Labor Standards) (Spanish Language).

Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to initiate and maintain relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders.
Additional Comments This position may require a fingerprint background check prior to appointment.
Position specific job duties may include occasional altered work schedule or job assignments which require availability and willingness to work occasional evenings and/or out-stationed assignments.
