Duties Description Service Area Mechanics are responsible for the maintenance and operation of all buildings and NYS Thruway Authority owned equipment at an assigned service area complex, in accordance with established preventive maintenance schedules and standards. They periodically check and service all types of building equipment and systems, perform minor, and occasionally major repairs and adjustments to equipment as required. Additional duties may include the following:
Maintains and services water treatment systems, wastewater treatment systems, ventilating and heating equipment, cooling towers, boilers, emergency generators, elevators, air compressors, electric motors and other electrical and mechanical systems and equipment and related controls.
Repairs doors, windows, vents, drains, railings, and other building components.
Controls emergencies such as propane gas and gasoline leaks and stoppages, electrical malfunctions and other hazardous conditions.
Coordinates major repairs, installation of new equipment, rearrangement of existing equipment and other project requiring agency personnel.
Supervises service area equipment operators by instructing staff in proper operating and maintenance procedures and techniques; assigning tasks; and reviewing work for adherence to established standards and schedules.
Maintains inspection records and stock part identification, break down, and reports. Operates tractor plow in snow removal operations.
Minimum Qualifications GENERAL PUBLIC MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Journey Level MQs:
Four years of experience in mechanical and/or electrical trades, such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, etc. (or some combination of same); AND possession of a Wastewater Treatment Certificate issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in the grade required for operation. Depending on the assigned work location, the incumbent may be required to possess the Water Treatment Operator certificate issued by the New York State Department of Health. To obtain Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification, the candidate must have a high school diploma or transcript, GED, or college diploma or transcript. The type of required certification will depend on work location and duties being performed. The incumbent must obtain the required certification(s) during their probationary period when required to do so.
Trainee 2 Minimum Qualifications:
Three years of experience in mechanical and/or electrical trades, such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, etc. (or some combination of same); AND 1 year of approved hands-on experience at a Wastewater Treatment Plant. Trainees must obtain a Wastewater Treatment Certificate issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in the grade required for operation during the probationary period. Depending on the assigned work location, the incumbent may be required to possess the Water Treatment Operator certificate issued by the New York State Department of Health. To obtain Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification, the candidate must have a high school diploma or transcript, GED, or college diploma or transcript. The type of required certification will depend on work location and duties being performed. The incumbent must obtain the required certification(s) during their probationary period when required to do so.
Trainee 1 Minimum Qualifications:

** All candidates must possess and maintain a valid Class D driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State. Depending on the assigned work location, the incumbent may be required to obtain a CDL (Class B) driver’s license with no air brake restriction within 12 months of appointment date.**
Pursuant to the Federal Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act, random drug and alcohol testing will be required.

ADDITIONAL PAY INFORMATION:
The salary range for this position includes all applicable annual components of pay which are:
Base Pay Range from Hiring Rate $29.51 up to Job Rate $31.95.
Location Pay: $0.85 for Mid-Hudson.
Recruitment & Retention Pay: $3.37.
This position may be filled as a traineeship. The starting salaries for this traineeship are outlined below. For current New York State employees, salary is based on the candidate’s salary at the time of hire.
$27.00 (Trainee 1, equated to SG-10)
$28.25 (Trainee 2, equated to SG-11)
$29.51 (Journey Level, SG-12)
