Duties Description Monitor and control the operation of data center equipment, monitor mission-critical customer systems, and operate print equipment to provide 24/7 service to customer agencies in conformance with documented procedures. Monitor all system consoles and hardware diagnostic displays for mainframe and open systems to ensure that systems are operating efficiently and customer on-line transactions, batch programs and data transfers are properly executing. Off-shift operators act as Help Desk consultants for users of remote systems and may consult with programmers/analysts on procedural matters and problems. Move or lift equipment and supplies. Some positions require employees to work nights, weekends, holidays and/or compressed work shifts.
This position resides on the Mail Center Team in the Bureau of Operations Services within the Chief Information Office.
• Operate print and post print mail center processing equipment and monitoring system consoles.
• Ensure all output meets printing and United States Postal Service standards.
• Materials are completed by the prescribed deadlines.
Minimum Qualifications No exam required under the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide (NY HELPS) Program.
Non-Competitive Qualifications for appointment under the NYHELPS Program:
For appointment to a Computer Operator Trainee, you must have:
• High school diploma or high school equivalency diploma.
For appointment to a Computer Operator, you must have:
• High school or high school equivalency diploma and six months full-time experience in the operation of large scale/commercial printing equipment, a mainframe or medium to large server, multi-variable print production, or information technology related activities.
Competitive Minimum Qualifications:
You must be currently reachable on the appropriate eligible list for this title, eligible under the 55 b/c program (see below), or eligible to transfer to this title under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.
Transfer:
For a 70.1 transfer to a Computer Operator, salary grade (SG)-10, you must have one year of permanent competitive service, or 55-b/55-c service in an approved title allocated to an SG-8 or above.

Appointments via transfer must not result in a second, consecutive transfer with an advancement of more than two S-grades or one M-grade.
