Duties Description The Wadsworth Center, Division of Environmental Health Sciences (DEHS) utilizes advanced instrumentation and generates complex data sets to identify new and emerging chemical threats to public health and to support public health investigations. In addition, the Wadsworth Center operates an internal Clinical Laboratory Information Management System (CLIMS) that is utilized to compile and store information on environmental, cannabis, and clinical samples, schedule testing, serve as a platform to enter test results, upload testing data to external partners, and generate test reports for clients.

A Research Scientist 3 is needed to properly interpret, evaluate, and apply this data, utilizing a high degree of skill in data analytics, data mining, and mathematical modeling. The incumbent will be responsible for developing a data analytics program leveraging advanced mass spectrometer outputs to detect emerging environmental chemical threats that contribute to an individual’s exposome, strengthening public health investigations, and serve as the Deputy CLIMS Coordinator to manage growing chemical testing demands, maintain data reporting, and retain institutional knowledge.

Minimum Qualifications Non-Competitive: bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences and four years of post-degree professional research experience** in an appropriate field.

**Substitutions: master’s degree in an appropriate field may substitute for one year of experience, and Ph.D. in an appropriate field may substitute for an additional year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications: PhD in a related scientific discipline with publication experience; experience in programming and developing applications in platforms such as Laboratory Information Management Systems; experience in researching and utilizing statistical data mining techniques and machine learning algorithms for the analysis of large datasets produced by modern analytical chemistry instrumentation; experience in computer programming and coding languages (e.g. Python, R, Matlab, LabView, etc.); and experience in processing and interpreting untargeted and targeted analysis data produced by modern analytical techniques such as high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS).
