Duties Description Shellfish Inspection Unit:
The Unit is responsible for administering the statewide shellfish inspection program for shipment, processing, and sale of shellfish in wholesale commerce to ensure compliance with state and federal requirements to protect the public health of shellfish consumers and to allow New York's shellfish to be shipped in intra and interstate commerce. The program operates under the requirements of the National Shellfish Sanitation Program (NSSP) and is evaluated by FDA for compliance.
Food Inspector 2 Job Duties:
•The Food Inspector 2 serves as the Unit Leader for the Shellfish Inspection Program and administers the statewide shellfish inspection program for shipment, processing and sale of shellfish in wholesale commerce to ensure compliance with state regulations and the National Shellfish Sanitation Program (NSSP) for public health protection
•Supervises food inspectors in the Shellfish Inspection Unit responsible to conduct sanitary and record keeping inspections of all permitted shellfish shippers and processors in New York
•Oversees the investigation of shellfish related illnesses and outbreaks and recalls if needed and coordinates these efforts with FDA, NYSDOH, NYCDOH and local health departments to protect public health
•Investigates non-compliance or illegal activities by firms or individuals engaged in shellfish shipping, processing and related activities without the proper DEC permits
•Administers the shellfish shipper permit program including the review and issuance of permits for approximately 360 shellfish businesses and certifies these businesses for placement on the FDA Interstate Certified Shellfish Shippers List for shipment of shellfish in interstate commerce
•Develop regulations, as necessary to meet NSSP compliance and protect public health
•Represents New York State at regional and national shellfish sanitation meetings
•Oversee the training and standardization of shellfish inspectors under the NSSP
•Serves as one of the State’s Shellfish Standardization Officers and coordinates the program audit with FDA
•Assists with work planning, internal controls, and budgeting for the unit
Minimum Qualifications Reassignment - Currently in the title and an employee of DEC
or
Reinstatement Eligible - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis or held a title as indicated under the transfer eligible section on a permanent competitive basis.
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Must be able to work in remote areas.
Travel may be required.
Overnight travel may be required.
Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
Telecommuting may be available up to 50% of work schedule, will be discussed at interview.

For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
