Duties Description Under the general direction of the Park Manager 1, SG-18 for Sojourner Truth State Park, the incumbent will perform maintenance and upkeep of the park. This position may also require traveling to work in other parks within Ulster County.
• Performs all maintenance activities including cleaning bathrooms and trash pick up.
• Performs routine maintenance on a variety of power-driven mechanical equipment including trucks, tractors, mowers and power saws.
• Operates and completes daily maintainenance of machinery such as skid steers, excavators, backhoes, and loaders.
• Assists with maintenance of roads, paths, and trails.
• Assists in snow and ice control and operates snow removal equipment.
• Assists with tree removal/pruning operations that require the operation of chippers, stump grinders, and lift equipment as needed.
• May supervise the operation of a small park or a recreational facility, such as a bathhouse, beach or picnic area or may be assigned responsibility for specific park or facility programs and activities.
• Assigns, reviews, trains, and evaluates work of lower-level employees.
• Occasionally prepares seasonal payrolls, timesheets, etc. and/or performs various clerical activities.
• Monitors and oversees fee collecting and verification activities.
• Controls access to parking to and from park facilities during peak periods and crowd control in assigned area(s) and special events.
• May be assigned responsibility for specific park or facility programs and activities.
• Keeps inventory of recreational and lifeguard equipment and monitors condition.
• May oversee operations for park programs or special events.
• Assists in emergency situations by applying emergency procedures and practices, assisting and directing staff and working with patrons to minimize potential problems.
• Communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons.
Minimum Qualifications One year of experience in the operation and/or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility;
OR - One year of experience in any of the following fields:
• Law enforcement or security
• Firefighting
• Emergency Medical Services
• Environmental education or stewardship
• Natural resources management (e.g., forest management, wildlife management/preservation)
• Historic preservation or interpretation
• Landscaping or grounds maintenance
OR - One year of military service in any branch of the United States Armed Forces;
OR - Thirty (30) semester credit hours of college-level coursework from an accredited college or university;
OR - Completion of a two-year technical/trades school program;
OR - Two years of experience as a trade assistant working under the direct supervision of a skilled tradesperson.

Reassignment Qualifications:
Current NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Employees only, with at least one year of permanent or contingent-permanent qualifying service as a Park Worker 3.
Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:
• Must be able to work a variable schedule, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must have the ability to operate a chainsaw and must complete OPRHP sawyer training or equivalent within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment. This training will be provided by OPRHP.
• Must have the ability to communicate in writing and to read and comprehend written material.

COMMENTS:
The CSEA contracts allow for salary protection for seasonal / hourly employees who are appointed to permanent graded positions with lower hiring rates under certain circumstances. We encourage OPRHP seasonal / hourly applicants to check in with your Regional Business Office Administrator to inquire about the potential impact on your salary. As a permanent graded employee you will be eligible for regular salary / performance advances (i.e. salary increases)
