Duties Description The Plant Utilities Engineer 2 (PUE 2) holds the responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of the University at Albany’s Heating and Cooling infrastructure. The incumbent operates, maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, tests, and calibrates mechanical equipment essential for the provision of heat, hot water, ventilation, air conditioning, and electrical distribution associated with the Central Heating and Cooling Plant and/or the Building Level Heating and Cooling Equipment. This role functions as a working Supervisor who may be responsible for Supervising Plant Utility Engineer 1s, Trades Generalists/Specialists, as well as Plant Utility and Maintenance Assistant titles. This position reports to a Plant Utilities Engineer 3 or higher and may be responsible for Supervising any of the three shifts (7a-3p, 3p-11p, 11p-7a) in the Power Plant OR may be responsible for Supervising and of the HVAC Shops that support the Campus.
Minimum Qualifications COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (NON-NY HELPS):
Candidates must have a reachable score on the Plant Utilities Engineer 2 Exam List OR
Be a current NYS employee and have a current permanent appointment with 1 year of service as a Plant Utilities Engineer 2, or in a title eligible to transfer to Plant Utilities Engineer 2 OR
Be a former NYS employee eligible for reinstatement to the title of Plant Utilities Engineer 2.
May be filled from a mandatory reemployment list if one is in effect at the time of appointment.
OPERATING NEEDS:
Experience in diagnosing and repairing HVAC systems, boilers, and auxiliary equipment. Performing preventive maintenance on mechanical and electrical equipment, including lubrication and repairs. Troubleshooting and calibrating electronic and pneumatic control systems. The ability to perform supervised plumbing, electrical, and refrigeration work. Operating boiler feedwater pumps, boilers, and other central plant equipment. Knowledge of safety procedures like arc flash and lockout/tagout. The ability to perform the physical duties of the job, including lifting, moving in confined spaces, and working in loud/dirty environments. Flexibility for shift work, as positions often require 24/7 coverage. Experience with emergency response to plant or utility failures. Positive customer service skills to interact with the campus community and address problems.
