Duties Description The Supervising Laboratory Assessor - Environmental (SLAE) will supervise staff performing inspections of environmental laboratories, coordinate and oversee training of new and existing assessment staff, perform direct observation of staff competency, monitor productivity, and review inspection documentation. Responsibilities include responding to complaints, performing follow-up inspections of underperforming laboratories and assisting the Program with laboratory related public health concerns. The SLAE will assist with the accreditation process, including review of laboratory standard operating procedures and data; serve as a subject matter expert for the Program and regulated parties; respond to technical questions from laboratory staff on technology, instrumentation and methods; draft program standard operating procedures; assist in the development of regulatory standards and internal policies. The SLAE reports directly to the Program Director and may perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Reassignment or Transfer: Current New York State (NYS) employee with permanent or contingent-permanent, competitive status as a Supervising Laboratory Assessor (Environmental), G-25 (formerly titled Supervising Environmental Laboratory Consultant, G-25) and eligible to transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.
Provisional/non-competitive promotion: Current NYS Department of Health employee with one year or more of permanent or contingent-permanent, competitive service as Laboratory Assessor (Environmental), G-22 (formerly titled Environmental Laboratory Consultant, Grade 22).
Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate would have experience conducting inspections of environmental laboratories. Knowledge of Federal and State environmental laboratory methods, standards, quality assurance, audits, and applicable laws and regulations. Experience communicating regulatory expectations and interpretations to regulated entities, and internal and external stakeholders. Responsibilities will require the candidate to have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal; excellent organizational skills; the ability to set priorities; and to carry out activities independently and work collaboratively as a group.

If three or fewer New York State Department of Health promotional candidates respond to this notice, the agency may, at its discretion, nominate a qualified employee for non-competitive promotion under the provisions of Section 52.7 of the Civil Service Law. Employees must have one year or more of permanent or contingent-permanent, competitive service in qualifying title noted above. If certified by Civil Service, mandatory reemployment list candidates must be considered first for appointment to this title.
For Provisional appointment: selected candidate will be required to take the next Civil Service examination offered for this title after appointment and must be immediately reachable from the resulting eligible list to maintain employment.
This position may require travel throughout New York State including overnights to areas not served by public transportation.
