Minimum Qualifications REACHABLE ON THE CIVIL SERVICE LIST FOR LEGAL ASSISTANT 1 OR TRAINEE, OR ELIGIBLE FOR TRANSFER.

If not already completed, all trainees are required to successfully complete six courses in paralegal studies and related skills from an accredited college or university, and one or more college or training courses in writing skills, within the two-year traineeship.

Duties Description • Prepare legal documents such as complaints, petitions, discovery responses, motion papers, affidavits, petitions, exhibits, judgments, and proposed orders in support of Collection Specialists, Legal Assistants, and Attorneys in the General Recoveries Unit.
• Review guardianship referrals from Office of Mental Health, Office for People with Developmental Disabilities, or other state facilities. Prepare a multitude of documents relating to guardianship petitions, follow up with client agency, and assist the attorney in preparing for hearing. All done with minimal assistance.
• Review legal documents received to ascertain whether the State has an interest in the proceeding.
• Conduct legal research and analyze legal decisions involving questions of law, shepardizing, and utilizing all department research software.
• Independently prepare demand letters; negotiate repayment programs or prepare summonses and all other paperwork which must accompany commencement of lawsuits.
• Review disclosure and independently determine and draft for attorney review appropriate responses; prepare draft discovery demands in accordance with Article 31 of the CPLR.
• Enforce money judgments, make recommendations, and complete appropriate documents for attorney’s signature.
• Skip trace and asset search on pre-judgment and post-judgment accounts.
• Contact the courts and county clerks. File papers, postpone court dates, research records, respond to client, defendant, or other parties involved in a proceeding, etc.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
