Minimum Qualifications The ideal candidate has at least five (5) years of federal and/or state court civil litigation and commercial law experience; however, a minimum of two (2) years litigation experience (including clerkships, if any) is required. Superior writing, analytic and organizational skills are also required.
Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State and be admitted to practice law in New York State. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that attorneys in the OAG be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.
Duties Description The New York State Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking an experienced litigator to serve as an Assistant Attorney General in the Commercial Litigation Section of the Litigation Bureau in the New York City office.
The Litigation Bureau represents the State of New York and its agencies and officers in state and federal courts in legal actions and proceedings relating to civil rights, education, social services, public employment, public health, law enforcement, corrections, state finance, insurance, taxation, and other litigated matters arising out of state operations and legislation.
Attorneys assigned to the Commercial Litigation Section primarily represent the Department of Taxation and Finance, the Department of Financial Services, the Department of State, the Department of Motor Vehicles, and the New York State Insurance Fund, in state and federal courts in legal actions involving taxation, finance, insurance law, employment discrimination, state regulation, and administrative law. Cases frequently present questions of constitutional law and statutory and regulatory interpretation, and have significant financial and policy implications for the State. Attorneys handle all phases of litigation through trial and have frequent opportunities to appear in court.
