Minimum Qualifications Must have a valid drivers’ license as a term and condition of employment.
Must be available for all trainings as required.
Must be able to perform physically demanding work for extended periods of time outside.
Duties Description Under the direction of the Trail Crew Leader, Trail Crew members work on priority trail projects within State Parks and Historic Sites. Projects may include new trail construction, tread and drainage improvements, carpentry of dimensional lumber projects, stone staircases and retaining walls, assist with hazard tree/limb removal, and general facilities maintenance. Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, with both hand and power tools. The position requires work on uneven and steep terrain, carrying and moving tools, materials, and equipment of 50 pounds or more.
Duties include but aren’t limited to:
Performing backcountry trail work for extended periods of time on priority trail projects;
Operating both hand and power tools for trail project construction or restoration work;
Maintaining, cleaning and sharpening hand tools (weekly);
Cleaning the provided state or rental vehicle (weekly);
Maintaining a safe work environment and educating the general public on the work being done.
Additional Comments Experience with outdoor labor, working on a trail crew, and First Aid & CPR certifications are strongly desired.
Capable with instructions to safely use a variety of hand and/or power tools; shovels, pick mattocks, rock bars, sledgehammers, hammers, electric cordless drills & electric carpentry tools, rigging gear; grip hoist, rock nets & slings etc.)
Capable with instructions to safely operate, maintenance, sharpen and clean tools/gear/equipment.
Must be able to lift loads up to 50 lbs.
Must be able to perform backcountry trail work efficiently & safely in rough uneven terrain during summer conditions, while maintaining a good, positive attitude.
Must demonstrate teamwork and display high standards of ethical conduct.
Able to represent the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation professionally.
This is a seasonal position from May - October 2021.
