Minimum Qualifications Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems OR an associate degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.
Substitution: Education as detailed below may be substituted for a maximum of two years of experience.
Graduation from a technical or vocational program, such as B.O.C.E.S, in automotive or diesel technology or automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for one year of experience.
Graduation from a one-year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience.
Within one (1) year from appointment to a Service & Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment) position, candidates must obtain a valid NYS Inspection Certification issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Possession of a valid CDL B (with no Air Brake restrictions) license to operate a motor vehicle in NYS is required for this position. Employees who do not possess this license at the time of their appointment must obtain it within five months or they will be terminated from this position. Employees must continuously maintain this license thereafter or face possible disciplinary action up to & including termination.
Duties Description Specific duties and job requirements will include, but not be limited to, the following:
•Performs the tasks of a journey-level mechanic in the repair and maintenance of automotive, motorized and construction equipment and attachments
•Uses appropriate test equipment and hand and power tools
•Does skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, repair and adjustment of mechanical, structural, hydraulic and electrical components of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment
•Does body and fender work including restoration, scraping, treating and spray painting of metal surfaces
•Periodically checks all mechanical equipment in conformance with established maintenance schedules and performs all necessary servicing operations
•Supervises other journey-level employees engaged in the maintenance and repair of motorized equipment
•Maintains necessary time and cost distribution records
•Requisitions parts and equipment
•Drives passenger cars and trucks
•Performs State Vehicle Inspections
