Duties Description The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets is seeking two Assistant Farm Products Inspector 1s to work in Orange County. The positions will assist Farm Products Grading Inspectors in conducting inspections and will also perform inspections of farm products at terminal market & shipping point locations. These inspections would include the ability to obtain samples and determine and certify physical characteristics of produce, while keeping notes of finding and writing certificate with the results of findings. Other duties may include conducting Food Safety GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) audits at farms and in packing houses, Country of Origin retail reviews, sampling for Pesticide Data Program and monitoring controlled atmosphere apple storage rooms. These positions are temporary and seasonal, with regular renewal from season to season based on program needs. The two seasons go from December 1st through March 31st and April 1st through November 30th. These positions are perfect for self-driven candidates who want autonomy over their schedule and enjoys working outside the office setting!

Field and Remote Work: Inspectors will be asked to complete administrative work, trainings, and inspection reports at their official station. While this position requires about 75% of inspector’s time in field, an inspector’s residence may be considered their official station if located in the county of their employment.

Travel Requirements: Appointment to certain positions requires extensive travel within a designated area of assignment. Appointees to these positions may be required to operate a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job. If the position requires that you operate a motor vehicle, you must possess a driver's license valid in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter. Fieldwork and travel expenses are reimbursed on a fixed schedule.
