Minimum Qualifications Possession of a FCC Radio Telephone Operator's License - General Class and a FCC Amateur Radio Technician Class License and four (4) years of experience in the design, installation, testing, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic communications equipment for commercial, engineering, or scientific use; or an associate's degree in electronics or electronic technology and two years of experience described above.
Duties Description The NYSDEC Communication Equipment Specialist duties:
1. Install radio communications equipment in NYSDEC vehicles, boats and apparatus.
2. Install, program radio equipment for DEC civilians.
3. Install, program radio equipment for DEC OPP officers including digital 911 channels for county 911 inter-operability.
4. Receives trouble reports from Raybrook and Central Dispatch, takes appropriate measures to mitigate whatever situation arises with equipment failures.
5. Receives trouble reports from Dispatch’s, Radio Engineers, and end users regarding radio tower failures, takes appropriate measures to mitigate whatever situation arises with tower equipment failures.
6. Bi-annually inspects DEC radio sites, tests antenna, tests radio repeaters for proper operation. Logs test results, takes note of site conditions including vegetation growth and building security.
7. Keeps track of National Interoperability channels and integrates into DEC radio equipment.
8. Promptly files trouble tickets with ITS regarding IP connections utilized by Central Dispatch for the Motobridge Dispatch platform.
9. Maintains a fully functioning radio shop with test equipment, adequate spare parts inventory, proper hand tools plus service records.
10. Routinely schedules radio programming, radio installations, preventative maintenance and repair at the radio shop.
Additional Comments Must have valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overtime may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 60 pounds.

Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
