Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.

Preferred Qualifications: Familiar with spreadsheet, mapping (GPS/GIS), data management, and following research protocols. Good communication skills, ability to work well with others, and a willingness to learn. Experience in the following: small mammal live-trapping; camera trapping; following survey and research protocols; navigating remote and difficult terrain; using GPS units for navigation and field data collection; using ArcGIS. Strong communication skills, ability to work well with others, and a willingness to learn are essential to this position.

Duties Description Assist in implementing a Small Mammal Distribution Assessment on DEC managed lands in DEC Region 8.

Technicians will assist with camera trapping, collection of eDNA, and potentially some trapping of small mammals utilizing a variety of methods including Sherman, tomahawk, snap, and pitfall traps. The position may also include conducting or participating in a variety of additional wildlife surveys and management activities, including nighttime nightjar surveys and bobcat camera trap surveys. Technicians will be responsible for accurate collection of data and careful organization of biological samples.

Position involves travel from the office to field sites and may require long days and frequent early morning, evening, and possibly limited nighttime hours. Travel and overtime may be required. Rabies vaccination is required in order to handle mammals.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain. Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.

This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 10/1/2024. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
