Minimum Qualifications Appointment Process and Minimum Qualifications:

Director of State Fair is an Exempt Class position within the NYS Civil Service Merit System. Section 41(1) of the Civil Service Law provides that the Exempt Class shall include "all other offices or positions for which the Civil Service Commission has determined it is not practicable to fill by competitive or non-competitive examination." These positions are not tenure-bearing.

Approval for appointment to this position will go through the Budget Director Approval (BDA) process, including a fingerprint background check.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in agriculture, business administration, public administration, communications, public relations, or a related field and eight years of experience working with conventions; trade shows; major fairs; expositions; convention centers; entertainment facilities; sports arenas and/or performing arts venues in the areas of fair management, equine/livestock exhibitions, event/ logistics planning, event promotions, oversight of facility use or concessions management.

**Substitutions: four years of specialized experience or an associate degree and two years of specialized experience may substitute for a bachelor’s degree; a J.D. or master’s degree may substitute for one year of specialized experience; a Ph.D. may substitute for two years of specialized experience.

Duties Description The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (AGM) is seeking a Director for the New York State Fair in Syracuse, New York. The Director is responsible for the oversight and management of the Division of the State Fair including administrative and operational aspects of events and programs held on the State Fairgrounds property including the Exposition Center. The Director will be a public figure within the community and will represent the State Fair in meetings and in daily contact with other State or Federal agencies, local governments, businesses, the agriculture industry, and other groups.

This position is located at the New York State Fairgrounds at 581 State Fair Boulevard, Syracuse, New York. We offer a professional and comfortable working environment with ample free parking. This is a management/confidential (MC) position in the exempt jurisdictional class that offers a competitive salary range of $133,453 - $168,606/year with excellent benefits. Division of the State Fair:

The New York State Fair and Fairgrounds are used to promote and highlight New York State and its agriculture, commerce, arts, and sciences to residents of the State of New York. As part of this mission, the New York State Fair provides an educational forum for agriculture and commerce; enhances the image of New York’s agriculture and commerce; offers affordable, quality entertainment and educational opportunities for the people of New York; contributes to the efforts of the State, industry, associations and private businesses in the promotion and marketing of agriculture and agri-business.

The annual State Fair, held for 13 days ending on Labor Day, preserves and enhances the agricultural legacy of the State of New York and promotes current and future agricultural awareness. The State Fair hosts statewide competitions in the breeding and showing of horses and livestock and the
production of quality wine, vegetables, fruit, honey, maple syrup, flowers, forage, and grain. Likewise, the Fair also hosts competitions for the youth of New York State that include horses, livestock, horticulture, robotics, dogs, sports, talent, and general economics. In total, the Fair averages 38,000 entries into the various competitions during the 13 days of the Fair, where over 2,000 youth and 9,500 heads of livestock will call the Fairgrounds home. The Fair's priority is attracting people to this unique tourism asset, which is the nation's first and oldest State Fair, attracting over 1.2 million people each year and bringing 180 events year-round.
