Minimum Qualifications Thirty semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.

Duties Description This position is based in the Cortland DEC office to work on the Susquehanna River Angler Survey which monitors angler catch rates and preferences. The survey will run from May 1, 2024 through November 30, 2024. The technician will work one weekend day and holidays plus three or four randomly selected weekdays (5 eight hour days per week = 40 hours). The survey will consist of driving a specified route covering multiple boat launches and shore fishing access locations each day while conducting angler interviews. Technicians must effectively interact and communicate with the public, ask questions regarding their angling experience, and accurately record their answers and biological data on fish caught. Processing fish for length, weight, and scale samples as available is required. The technicians will be required to work in a variety of inclement weather conditions. Must work effectively both independently and as a team member. Other duties will include, but not limited to, preparing gear and equipment, data entry and other computer tasks, plus various Fisheries Technician duties. One day a week the individual will be working with Unit staff on projects such as fisheries field surveys.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain. Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Must complete certification to operate motorized boats or personal watercrafts within one month of appointment.
