Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
• Four years of experience and/or training in grounds maintenance work, of which two years involved supervisory experience over subordinates; or one year as a Supervisor of Grounds.
• Must be a fully-certified pesticide applicator and possess a category 3A New York State commercial pesticide applicators license.
• Must possess a valid minimum Class B New York State Commercial Driver’s License with:
• Tanker endorsement
• No air brake restriction

Departmental Operating Needs:

This position is responsible for leading a team in the clearance of snow and ice removal from our campuses. The successful candidate must be willing and have a demonstrated history of, working overtime for snow removal and other seasonal requirements, including special event setup and breakdown.

As the health, safety, and welfare of our campus community is dependent on the person in this position, a demonstrated history of reliable attendance, and job performance under emergency operations is a factor that will be considered when filling this vacancy.

Incumbent will represent the University Grounds Department in a variety of settings and interact frequently with the campus community. This includes, but is not limited to campus master plan groups, task forces, and various campus and off-campus committees, and therefore, most possess exemplary customer service skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, and exhibit proficient computer skills.

Physical Demands:
• Must be able to perform all the job functions listed within the position summary. Bending, twisting, ability to carry 80 pounds, ascend/descend ladders, access equipment located on mezzanines, catwalks, basements and crawlspaces. Ability to work off ladders, scaffolding, in confined spaces and/or where air monitoring may be required. Work in loud/noisy dusty/dirty environments and around rotating equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience working in a grounds department in an institutional (campus) setting
• Background in horticulture
• Experience in sustainable landscaping practices

Duties Description Position Summary:
The University at Buffalo has an exciting opportunity for a Head Grounds Supervisor, within University Facilities Operations, to lead a large-scale critical operation department. You will serve as the manager of a large and complex grounds maintenance operation across three campuses, covering 1,400 acres, overseeing various levels of supervisors, team members, and contractors. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director of Facilities Operations for Buildings and Grounds.

Duties Include:
• Manages all work activities of the grounds, garbage and recycling, moving services, and exterior signs departments
• Responsible for the timely and complete performance of crews functioning seasonally across three work shifts
• Responds, prioritizes, and schedules routine and urgent grounds maintenance service as needed
• Provides training program oversight for team members by demonstrating proper use of equipment and materials and the performance of specific tasks to meet quality standards
• Maintains supervisory control of the grounds department team members, hiring, records of employee time, team member work performance plans, and individual personal development
• Reports to Facilities Management and other campus partners on the progress of projects
• Plans or assists in the planning of landscaping and other grounds projects by preparing rough sketches, schedules, and estimates of the staff, materials and equipment needed to accomplish a project
• Prepares purchase orders and justification for the purchase of grounds materials, equipment, and supplies
• Assists in the selection of grounds contractors, and manages the work to ensure completion according to contract specifications
• Other duties as assigned

A significant portion of the work involved by this individual will be directing crews to perform snow and ice removal or treatments, special event support, and other off-hour campus needs. The position requires working off-hours and overtime seasonally to fully deliver critical services to maintain campus operations.
