Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in the natural sciences and three years of post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field, or a Master's degree in the appropriate field and two years of such experience; or a doctorate in the appropriate field.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in medical technology, experience in microbiology including culture techniques for aerobic and anerobic organisms and susceptibility testing and molecular biology including real-time PCR and sequencing (Sanger and Whole-genome). The preferred candidate will have experience with assay development, validation, and implementation. Outstanding data analysis skills, basic programming skills, and excellent oral and written communication skills are highly desired.

Duties Description The Wadsworth Center has a continued commitment to ensure the provision of high-quality health care to residents of New York state, including mothers, infants and children. Pregnant women, infants and children are highly susceptible to many bacterial pathogens, such as vaccine preventable diseases (pertussis, bacterial meningitis), and foodborne related diseases (listeria, shiga-toxin producing E. coli). The Bacterial Disease Laboratory helps ensure the health of New Yorkers by working collaboratively with the Center for Community Health to identify these pathogens so appropriate treatment can be administered as early as possible, as well as to determine the source of disease outbreaks. The Bacteriology Laboratory serves as the public health reference laboratories for bacterial identification and characterization using classical microbiological methods and molecular methods. The incumbent will review and update standard operating procedures, maintain quality control and prepare reports for the General Bacteriology Section; Participate in routine clinical laboratory testing and interpretation of results such as culture and biochemical analysis, serotype/serogrouping/Quelling, and MALDI-TOF MS; Train individuals in General Bacteriology, specimen culture, and diagnostic testing and identification; Provide CLIMs support and organization within the General Bacteriology section; Communicate with clinical laboratories, labs within the Wadsworth Center, and epidemiology, as appropriate, regarding critical testing, results, and reporting.

Additional Comments Permanent, non-competitive, fulltime. Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position, the selected candidate will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment. Work hours may be variable. Some travel may be required.

This position may require travel throughout New York State including overnights to areas not served by public transportation.
