Reassignment Candidates: Current New York State Department of Health employee with permanent or contingent-permanent service as a Public Health Specialist 1 (Environment) or Trainee.
A physical/medical examination through the Department of Civil Service's Employee Health Service (EHS) is also required for appointment to this title. Details will be discussed at time of offer.
Preferred Qualifications: Backgrounds in geology, hydrogeology, engineering, chemistry, environmental sciences, or similar fields. Experience with environmental investigations, evaluating environmental sampling data, and assessing human exposure pathways. Good communication skills, both written and oral.
Duties Description Do you want to help communities impacted by environmental contamination? Here in the Bureau of Environmental Exposure Investigation (BEEI), we investigate and evaluate exposures to environmental contamination, and recommend actions to prevent or minimize exposures to protect public health. We also educate communities on potential exposures and how to reduce exposures to chemicals.
Our work is accomplished by collaborating with agency partners such as the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation United States Environmental Protection Agency and Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), other NYSDOH bureaus, local health departments and engaging with citizen’s groups, businesses and residents. Key programs are the State and Federal Superfund and Brownfield Cleanup programs and the ATSDR APPLETREE cooperative agreement. We also work on emerging issues and initiatives that could impact public health due to chemical contamination.
The duties for this position include: reviewing and providing input on a variety of environmental work plans and reports, conducting site visits, collecting samples, evaluating sample results and providing health-related recommendations. Interfacing with the public is another important aspect of the job and staff may attend public meetings and availability sessions as well as respond to public concerns and questions via phone or written correspondence. Some travel is required but is not extensive.

This position may require travel throughout New York State including overnights to areas not served by public transportation.
