Minimum Qualifications Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including twelve (12) semester credit hours in forestry, which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: botany, dendrology, forest biology, forest ecology, forest ecosystem management, forest entomology, forest health, forest mensuration, forest pathology, forest protection, forest soils, general soils, geographic information systems, land surveying, and silviculture OR One (1) year of technical forestry experience in one (1) or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests.

Duties Description Incumbent will provide direct support of multiple programs within Region 5. Approximate breakdown of work to include 60% State Forest, 30% Easement and Private Forestry and 10% other work as assigned. Incumbent will perform forestry work on state forest and privately owned lands under the direction of a Forester 1 or land manager. Incumbent will be required to:
- Gather and input forest inventory data into the State Forest Inventory Database
- Assist with timber type mapping and inventory plot layout using GIS technology
- Collect stand analysis data and mark timber according to Forester's marking guide and prescription
- Assist with lay out and inspection of timber sales
- Locate and evaluate the condition of property boundary lines
- Use ArcGIS for creating and editing shapefiles and maps
- Perform conservation easement tasks such as monitoring and field data collection, deed and document analysis and interpretation, preparation and presentation of written materials

Essential skills and functions include tree identification, tree diameter and height measurement, gather field data using hand-held GPS unit and / or electronic data collector, ability to use 10 BAF prism, clinometer, tree scale stick and other related equipment, assist with forest type and asset mapping using GIS technology.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain. Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overtime may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.

This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2025, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
