Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience in carpentry work under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in carpentry at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Carpenter) traineeship or a two-year carpenter training, apprenticeship, OR equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.
- Working knowledge of carpentry techniques.
- Ability to use the tools, machines, equipment, and materials of
the carpentry trade.
- Ability to plan, lay-out, and complete varied carpentry work.
- Ability to read blueprints and interpret building and furniture
plans.
- Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor.
- Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
- Ability to read plans and specifications.
- Ability to supervise others
- Ability to climb ladders and work at heights on scaffoldings and
platforms.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Must possess a valid New
York State Driver's License.
Duties Description - Performs construction activities such as erecting or renovating
building systems, and in repairing and construction of roofs.
- Repairs structural woodwork and equipment such as doors,
window sashes, storm windows, screens, window guards, stairs,
and railings.
- Erects and moves wall partitions and doors.
- Removes and installs ceiling systems, floor tile, and carpet.
- Installs and adjusts doors and builds hardware including locks,
door closures, doorknobs, hinges, door checks, sash fittings, and
other lock-work activities as required.
- Builds forms for concrete work.
- Supervises a small maintenance crew usually consisting of
maintenance assistants and helpers.
- As required, may draw rough sketches or prepare plans to scale
from verbal or written instructions to accomplish a project.
- Installs glass in windows, doors, and partitions.
- Does general millwork; may build cabinets, furniture, and other
wooden equipment in the shop using woodworking machines.
- From plans, may recommend to supervisor and order the kind,
quantity, and quality of materials to be used.
- Assembles materials, tools, and equipment required to complete
work according to plan.
- As required, gives verbal instruction and/or demonstrates
proper carpentry techniques and the use of carpentry tools and
equipment.
Additional Comments This is a non-competitive permanent position in the labor class jurisdictional classification. Candidates should be aware that a preferred list, transfer list, placement roster and/or reemployment roster of laid off State employees may be certified against this vacancy by the Department of Civil Service.
