Minimum Qualifications The qualifications include at least four years investigative experience, as well as demonstrated leadership capabilities. Experience investigating drug smuggling, threats of violence, and deaths of individuals is preferred. The ability to adapt to a changing environment and handle multiple priorities are necessary. OSI may accept relevant advanced educational degrees (i.e., above high school or GED) as a substitute for investigative experience on a two-years education for one-year investigative experience basis for all of OSI’s peace officer positions. For example, an associate degree (2 years) in criminal justice and forensic science can be substituted for one year of investigative experience, and a bachelor’s degree (4 years) in a pre-law and criminal justice can be substituted for two years’ investigative experience. This position will require a high degree of organizational and writing skills, as well as must be available to respond immediately to incidents and possibly remain in the area as needed.
OSI investigative staff must possess, at a minimum, knowledge of the applicable laws, the highest levels of behavior including personal integrity and ethics; fairness; character; judgment; attitude; and respect for and ability to work with others inside and outside OSI. OSI investigative staff must have state-of-the-art technical skills for thorough and objective investigations and to fulfill OSI’s mission. Appropriate licensure and certifications (including being or becoming a peace officer qualified to carry a firearm) are also required. The ability to travel is also necessary. Duties Description The Office of Special Investigations (OSI) is seeking qualified candidates to be considered for to serve as a Senior Investigator (Sr. Inv.) for the Criminal Investigations Division (CID). This multifaceted Division investigates a range of criminal activities associated with the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS), including but not limited to the following: violent acts resulting in serious injury or death, threats of violence, gun and drug distribution and possession, and criminal organizations engaged in extremist violence or terrorist activities. CID also provides investigative assistance, intelligence, and information to law enforcement agencies. CID participates in several task forces and intelligence centers. CID also has a Canine Unit, dedicated to interdicting controlled substances and other contraband smuggled into correctional facilities.
A Senior Investigator in OSI CID position is responsible for the daily operations of CID and management of CID staff in their assigned geographical regions of New York State. A Senior Investigator position is the sixth-level leadership and supervisory level role (Deputy Commissioner/Chief, Assistant Commissioner/Assistant Chief, Director of Operations and the Deputy Chief Investigator for CID and Assistant Deputy Chief Investigators). A Senior Investigator will handle a case load, as well as supervise investigators handling CID cases, and ensure that CID investigations are thorough, timely, and fair, as well as compliant with all relevant policies and laws.
Additional Comments Location: OSI Buffalo (Alden, NY) or Groveland office. Office assignments are based upon the needs of OSI and the Department. Travel is required.
