Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience in carpentry work under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in carpentry at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Carpenter) traineeship or a two-year carpenter training, apprenticeship, OR equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.

* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of “C” or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.

Trades Specialist (Carpenter) Trainee 1, Non-Statutory (NS) Equated (EQ) to Salary Grade (SG) 9

Full-time permanent service in a position allocated at Grade 12 or below which is primarily engaged in the performance of unskilled and/or semiskilled labor and trades tasks; must be 18 years of age or older; possess a High School diploma or general equivalency diploma recognized by the New York State Education Department; and be proficient in English and math.

Trades Specialist (Carpenter) Trainee 2, NS EQ SG 11

Successful completion of a 52-week probationary period as a Trades Specialist (Carpenter) Trainee 1; OR completion of 45 hours of technical math coursework and 15 hours of blueprint reading/schematics coursework or passage of an equivalency exam or proof of successful completion of equivalent training, 144 hours of carpentry trade specific instruction, and 2,000 hours of on-the-job training. Trainees must maintain a “C” or better average in their coursework.

Duties Description As a Trades Specialist (Carpenter), duties include, but are not limited to:

• Perform journey level carpentry work and will perform multiple tasks and projects involving carpentry, woodworking, and general construction.

• Travel in park vehicles to other facilities within the Palisades Interstate Park Region.

• plan and lay out work, including ordering materials and equipment.

• Complete routine carpentry and repairs, including finish work; perform restoration work on historic buildings; and complete projects that will retain the original historic fabric.

• May monitor and train crews in routine carpentry skills, safety practices, and supervise crews on a variety of projects.

• Will install and adjust door and building hardware as required.

• Perform manual labor, including lifting, bending, climbing, and standing for extended periods.

Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be qualified and medically cleared to wear a respirator and have knowledge of good safety practices that must be utilized.
• Should possess experience in the design, construction, finishing and repair of furniture.
• Must have the ability to read blueprints and project plans as well as supply rough sketches for work to be performed and have a working knowledge of modern code compliance.
• Must have the ability to operate and maintain various types of woodworking equipment to ensure accurate and safe operation and use the proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the tools required.
• Must have a working knowledge of various forms of finish applications and the proper techniques and safety protocols for varnishes, stains, etc.

Location Pay:

The hiring rate will be the sum of the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 09 ($41,399) and the Downstate Adjustment ($3,400). The job rate will be the sum of the statutory job rate for CSEA Grade 12 ($59,757) and the Downstate Adjustment ($3,400).

Depending on each applicant's experience and/or current salary if employed by New York State already, the appointment may be made to the Trades Specialist (Carpenter) Trainee 1, Trades Specialist (Carpenter) Trainee 2, or the Trades Specialist (Carpenter) titles. Included below is a breakdown of the salary at each level of the traineeship.
