Minimum Qualifications Non-competitive: bachelor’s degree and either: satisfactory completion of a two-year traineeship or two years of experience* in data visualization, and statistical models and data mining tools.
Substitution: A master’s degree in data or computer science, informatics, economics, statistics, mathematics, or a related field, may substitute for one year of the specialized experience. A Ph.D. in the above fields may substitute for two years of the specialized experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Proficiency in Excel, Tableau, and SAS strongly preferred, ArcGIS, and R , knowledge also helpful.
• Experience working with large datasets; including importing, merging data, and validation.
• Comfortable with presenting and explaining data analyses methods and results to both technical and public audiences.
• Able to respond to requests quickly and manage multiple priorities.
* The salary range listed in this posting reflects the full range for this graded position, factoring in annual performance advances based on satisfactory annual performance reviews. Candidates with no previous State service will begin at the hiring rate (starting rate of the salary range) listed above, plus any applicable Location Pay/Geographic Pay/Shift Pay differentials.
Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
Duties Description Under the direction of Head of the Prevention Data Management Unit and Analysis, the Data Analyst 1 duties include but are not limited to:
• Extracting and performing analysis of prevention data to identify data quality issues.
• Providing summaries or reports related to program and provider data.
• Responding to provider requests for technical assistance as received by email and phone.
• Supporting implementation of enhancements and system updates in the prevention data system and related data collection systems.
• Working with external vendor and other internal customers to improve/maintain functionality of internal systems.
• Reviewing and resolving any issues related to new provider and new program requests.
• Contacting providers regarding data entry and reporting compliance issues, and assisting with resolution of data entry issues.
• Reviewing and suggesting improvements to current or planned processes.
• Utilizing SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) Reports, Excel, and Oracle analytical tools as needed.
• Working with cross-functional teams to interpret data and support decision-making processes.
• Applying knowledge of statistical methods and data mining techniques to uncover patterns, trends, and insights.
• Other relevant duties as assigned.
