Minimum Qualifications One year experience in environmental education programs; or one year of college study with specialization in natural science, natural resources, or environmental education.

Experience working with urban youth preferred. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license. Travel and working early morning, evenings and weekends will be required, some overnight travel to be expected. For required travel, you will have access to a state vehicle and will be eligible for reimbursement for food and lodging. Actual work schedule, duties, and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview.

Duties Description The Environmental Education Assistant will primarily lead the DEC Capital District Campership Program, which will provide outdoor and natural resource experiences to 30 to 50 urban youth with limited access and opportunity for outdoor recreation. A week at one of DEC’s summer residential camps is the keystone of the program.

Primary duties will include:
• Lead After School Conservation Club programming, including hands-on environmental education lessons and outdoor recreation activities
• Coordinate and lead field trips such hiking, fishing, winter recreation, visits to nature centers and museums, bird watching and overnight camping for Capital District urban youth
• Work with existing youth-focused organizations to identify prospective campers; recruit and prepare youth for their one-week campership to one of DEC’s summer youth camps
• Transport youth to camp and spend the week onsite providing support for campers
• Provide leadership development through career exploration, participation in stewardship activities and development of outdoor skills for camp attendees
Other Duties:
• Teach outdoor skills to children and families through hands-on activities and demonstrations at community and DEC-sponsored events
• Attend fairs, festivals, career days, hunter sport shows, and other events to promote outdoor recreation, DEC camps, teacher workshops, and other DEC events and messages
• Work with DEC programs to help them convey their conservation messages to different audiences using appropriate methods and techniques

Unique Duties
Must be willing to be certified in NYS Department of Health approved courses within six months of appointment:
• American Red Cross Responding to Emergencies or equivalent
• American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer or equivalent and must be in its first year

Additional Comments This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/25, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Travel may be required.
Overnight travel may be required.
Weekends and holidays may be required.
Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.
